Our country's innovations in arms design and manufacturing have been key to individual liberty from the earliest days of the Republic. In the modern era, the informal title “America's rifle” has almost exclusively been applied to the AR-15—and for good reason. It is, after all, the semi-automatic iteration of our nation's frontline service arms. More than that, though, the AR is the platform on which several generations of American military personnel have been trained and have come to rely during and after their time in service. Read More

Leupold & Stevens can claim credit for a number of the optics industry's most transformative innovations, and, as a result, the Oregon-based company has had an outsized influence on the state of the contemporary riflescope landscape. Primarily a maker of surveying equipment and water-metering devices up until that time, the company's entry into sport optics began when a fogged-up riflescope ruined an Eastern Oregon deer hunt for president Marcus Leupold in the mid-1940s. To fully understand today's A5, let's look back to the year 1899, four years before the first Browning Auto-5 shipped. Like many of today's guns, this story begins at the workbench of John Moses Browning. Browning knew at the time that he had a revolutionary idea, and it was one that he was not willing to give up on. He first brought his shotgun concept to Winchester, with no success. Eventually, Browning took his novel plans to FN of Belgium where a contract was agreed upon in 1902. The following year, FN shipped the world's first commercially successful semi-automatic shotgun, the Auto-5. Read More

There has been a lot in the news media lately on the Glock 17 pistol. Most of it, as might be expected of the anti-gun press's coverage of any firearms, is pure hogwash. Without going into details that would lead to irritation at best and apoplexy at worst, it should be said that... Read More

Recently, while writing about the Mauser 98 rifle, I needed to reference technical information about its internal construction. My first thought was to open Jerry Kuhnhausen's The Mauser Bolt Actions, M91 Through M98, A Shop Manual. Then, as I was working on that story, it came to my attention that the author had died in 2022. Read More

Smith & Wesson has long had many options for those interested in a dedicated concealed-carry gun, starting with the company's diminutive revolvers that date back to the 19th century. However, more recently, the company decided to offer a different take on the popular micro-compact nine concept that proliferates in today's handgun market. The Smith & Wesson CSX is a metal-frame, hammer-fired handgun that's still lightweight and compact, yet offers a familiar manual of arms for those used to traditional M1911-style guns. Henry Repeating Arms has donated $25,000 to the Border Patrol Foundation (BPF). The funds will help support the organization's mission to honor the memory of fallen U.S. Border Patrol agents, as well as provide immediate financial aid to their families and to officers injured in the line of duty. Their dedication and sacrifice to national security remains unwavering, despite the peril of often working rugged terrain that chronically delays backup's arrival and the divisive debate over illegal alien crossings. Remington Ammunition's Core-Lokt bullets have been counted on by hunters to reliably take game for more than 80 years. And while the addition of a pointed polymer tip may seem to be a fairly minor change not worthy of too much excitement, when a product's track record is as proven and as long-standing as is Core-Lokt's, the occasional minor tweak is all that is necessary—or indeed even wise. Rest assured, the 10 mm Auto cartridge is not only here to stay, but it's experiencing a bit of a renaissance these days. Most major manufacturers now offer a handgun chambered in 10 mm (and several offer a rifle). Last year, Smith & Wesson added the 10 mm to its M&P handgun line-up. New for 2023, the company is giving its 10 mm-chambered M&P the Performance Center treatment. Read More
