Many years ago, I dabbled in the world of Smallbore Silhouette in an effort to improve my offhand game for NRA High Power and Service Rifle. Reluctant to take on yet another discipline, it was shocking how quickly it grabbed hold of me, and I quickly found myself making as many matches as possible. Knocking over tiny steel targets without any means of support is undoubtedly satisfying, and I urge all of you to give it a try. Read More

Rules are the backbone of any game, and as Director of the National Range Officer Institute (NROI), it's my job to interpret those rules for USPSA, and to assist in the training of Range Officers at all levels. The majority of USPSA rules deal with safety on the range. USPSA is a dynamic sport that requires competitors to use full-power handguns (and rifles and shotguns at times), to solve a competitive shooting problem under the clock. Read More

In Match 1935, an editorial in The American Rifleman stated that after a three-year lapse, the National Match program would most likely be restored. The statement proved to be true, but only because the NRA intervened when Congress did not appropriate National Match funds for 1935. The eventual decision to approve the funding also seemed practical given the growing tensions around the world and the need for military preparedness in the United States. Read More

Shooting steel targets in long-range competition requires a "spotter" manning a spotting scope to call out impacts and, even then, some hits may not be visible. The same applies when shooting lightweight, low-velocity .22 Long Rifle bullets at steel 200, 300 and more yards downrange. Hornady's new bright LED HIT Target Impact Indicator can eliminate doubt by visually confirming hits to 1,000 yards and beyond. Read More
