Hammerli Arms isn't a particularly well-known brand in the United States, despite having some rich history behind it. The Swiss-born, German-owned company got its start in the 1860s making gun barrels. It eventually became known for finely built sporting rifles and, by the mid-20th century, even Olympic target pistols. But in recent years, after the brand's acquisition by Umarex, parent company of Walther Arms, few guns bearing the Hammerli name have rolled out of the company's German plant—the most recent being a .22 Long Rifle-chambered AR-15-style training rifle, a design that, while affordable, is hardly innovative. I was excited when Colt reintroduced the Python in 2020. I read Wiley Clapp's excellent review and looked forward to seeing the new "Snake Gun." However, I became busy with other projects and wasn't able to get one of the 4" or 6" guns to try. When Colt announced the return of the rare 3" version, I was again excited and was impressed by several I saw come through Guerrilla Armament, my local shop. Read More

Legislation signed into law during March recaptured significant portions of the Second Amendment for law-abiding citizens in several states. Reversing infringements on the right to keep and bear arms is a growing trend in much of the nation, although left-leaning politicians and a liberal minority continue wagging the gun-control dog elsewhere and in the mainstream media. While the basic design of modern hunting rifles has changed little since the 1950s, great strides have been made within the realm of hunting optics during that same time. Riflescopes have progressed from being a potential liability in the field to a game-changer for longer-distance shots and lower lighting conditions, particularly during the past decade, thanks to the integration of advanced electronics into firearm optics. The Burris Veracity PH illustrates this advancement perfectly. Read More

As the world's oldest firearms manufacturer, Beretta has quite a bit of history. Over the years, the company has sought to balance heritage with modern features that today's firearm enthusiasts want. They have done this by updating some of its classic firearms, like the 92 and Cheetah series, and given these updated models an "X" designation. Widespread wisdom declares that cartridges handloaded with attention to every detail can make a regular hunting rifle shoot as true as a target rifle. To determine if all that effort is worth it, I handloaded a meticulously prepared batch of cartridges and another lot using only the most essential steps, then fired both sets through an ordinary Ruger M77 chambered in .25-'06 Remington that has shot very accurately for me throughout the years. Let's see how it went. Read More

One of the very first handguns that I ever saw up close was my dad's Belgian Baby Browning chambered in .25 ACP. I was fascinated by the fact that it was small enough to fit in the palm of his hand, and yet it was still a fully functional pistol. Once I was old enough to start buying handguns of my own, my enthusiasm for the smallest-of-the-small didn't waver. Read More
